For all of my life I just assumed that interior designers worked specifically with someone’s living space; boy was I wrong. I made the mistake of commenting to a designer that work must be slow for them with people cutting back on home designs. She informed me that she doesn’t specialize in home interior design; instead she works a lot with officers, airport terminals, hotels and restaurants.

She explained to me that I shouldn’t confuse interior design with interior decoration. Interior decorating is focused on the selection of color palettes to go with complimentary furniture, window coverings, flooring, lighting and artwork. It didn’t even occur to me that interior designers would specialize in a distinct discipline.
