Once you are in good shape, i.e. not overweight, and you want to get toned, you should begin strength training. Often, people start lifting weights much too soon in their overall fitness plan. Once you do start your strength-training plan, you have to make a choice. Are you looking for endurance strength and toning, or increasing muscle mass? If you are looking for endurance and toned muscles, you should lift smaller weight increments for many sets. If you are looking to increase muscle mass, then you should lift very heavy weights for smaller sets. For complete fitness, you should do a mixture of both, but everyone has different goals.
