The Science of Gene Knockout

About a year ago, a Nobel Prize was awarded to a few biophysicists for what is called the gene knockout technique. This technique allows us to determine what exactly each gene in our genome does, and then we can determine how to alter it. This has opened new doors since we can now identify if a sperm or egg cell has a certain gene that will cause a terrible disease. Also, we can make mutations occur to species by alternating, say, the gene that makes us have a left hand. In time, gene knockout will help us fight many inherited diseases, such as sickle cell anemia or Alzheimer’s.
