Utah Lawmakers Believe Education Cost Too High

Lawmakers in Utah believe college tuition is too high. House Bill 35 proposes a 5 percent tax credit to students pursuing higher education. This week the bill passed unanimously in the Utah Senate Education Committee.

The bill will allow students to file for a non-refundable tax credit of 5 percent of the students’ annual earnings that could be used toward tuition and other student fees. Tuition has been on the rise in the last decade, increasing nearly 22 percent.

Opponents of the bill fear that if passed it will suck funds from secondary education systems. The Utah School Boards Association agree that if passed, the bill would take money away from highschool programs. Their argument is that if students don’t get a quality education in highschool, they won’t make it to college.
