For the past few years I have been working on search engine optimization for an auto transport company. It is unbelievable how competitive the search term ?auto transport? is. Today, my primary site is in seventh position on Google.com and seems to be consistently moving up. Here are a few things that I have found that work.
Everything that is measured grows and anything not managed will deteriorate. First put Google Analytics on your website. This has proven to be a useful tool for me to see what keywords I am succeeding in and where to focus my efforts for improvement. Without any type of measuring tool, you really have no idea how many visitors are hitting your site. In the category of measuring, install the Alexa toolbar in your browser and set your homepage to your website. After several weeks you will notice an improvement in your ranking just by opening your browser on a daily basis. For whatever reason, Google puts quite a bit of stock in Alexa?s page ranking system.
As far as content is concerned, make sure you are delivering fresh useful content to your viewers. If your content does not ever change, then Google will see your site as a stagnant site and will begin moving you down in the ranks until they see some changes being made. A couple ways that I have achieved this are by delivering useful statistics to my viewers. Because I had this huge database full of information, it was easy to mine the database for interesting statistics. I even took it one step further by automating the process so having fresh content on my site wasn?t even something I had to think about on a weekly basis. Yet another way to have fresh content is by allowing others to post to your site. If you are building a site that allows feedback from your customers, you can post that information on your front page. However, if you choose to do this I would strongly recommend moderating the posts.
Lastly, never underestimate the power of back links. These are links on other sites that link to you. When Google finds these links to your site, they conclude that your site must be important if someone wants to link to it. Get your site?s link on blogs, listing directories, and even on some of your vendor websites. A link to your site found on a site with relevant content holds more weight than just a directory listing. For example, having car dealerships link to my site about car shipping will help me more than having a site about baseball link to me.
There are hundreds of SEO tools available to analyze content and help with site structure. They can help you measure your keywords, headings, meta tags, and more. I have found some of these tools to be very useful in adjusting my content to be more appealing to search engines. While site structure and content is very important, they can only carry you so far. Find ways to get your site woven in to the network of your industry.
