Search Engine Optimization Methodology

What SEO-related items should be researched?

First, and foremost, you need to know the keywords that you want to go after. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP in the search engine optimization process, so make sure you spend enough time on it to know that you have the terms that you want.

You might choose high traffic keywords or industry-specific keywords, but whatever you do pick, make sure you do your homework.

High traffic keywords might bring in the hits, but if the term is not really what your visitors are searching for (because your site actually deals more with a specific branch of the keyword than the one that you chose) you will be wasting a lot of bandwidth on people that are not buying what you are selling.

Is your keyword phrase too competitive? Answering this question depends a lot on how much effort you are willing to put into optimizing your site and how much time you have to wait before the traffic really starts coming in. No phrase is ever TOO competitive if you have the time and the resources.

There are many cases, however, where a similar phrase gets a slightly smaller amount of hits but has much less competition. These are often referred to in the industry as SEO niches. You might be able to achieve the high traffic you desire and spend much less time and money doing so, if you can locate and exploit a niche that few others have found.

I could go into more detail on the specifics of how to locate these niches, but that kind of defeats the purpose of this article -- persuading you to hire a search engine optimization firm such as Lavaball to research this for you.
